mallie g asked:

I’m a seventeen year old girl, and this is the Summer before my senior year.Needless to say,I have many things I need to accomplish before this year is over, and I still have never had a job.(Though,I have literally applied everywhere, and I am on a never ending search.)
But,my concern is,am I asking too much from my mother?
This Summer I was accepted into the All Ohio State Fair Youth Choir, which requires a decent amount of cash.
Not including the clothes and toiletries and my first cell phone.
So,my mom easily dropped over 300 dollars on that.
But,in two weeks,I have to take senior pictures, which will obviously cost an arm and a leg.
But I need clothing to wear for my portraits.
I know,I’m a seventeen year old girl,I have tons of clothes, blah blah blah.
Haha, well I do…but, none of them are acceptable for senior pictures. They’re not the nicest, nor do I like them.
Not that”They’re not good enough for me.”
But the top majority of my clothes are someone else’s(Not nice, just school shirts or sweat pants.) or they’re something I picked up from Walmart that automatically shrunk after I washed it once.
I really want my pictures to show who I am,and my style that I’ve never been able to show.
So,I’ve went online and make quite a list, even though the majority of the items are on sale and less than 10 dollars. The most expensive piece is a pair of flats that are 34.95,which took FOREVER to find.
FYI:I need a minimum of four outfits for the pictures.
Overall…the total is $185.84.
That’s an awful lot,and I just don’t know what to say.
I help around the house so much, and I don’t expect her to pay me.
I’m not sure how our money situation is…probably not spectacular.
But I know that I really want these clothes, which makes me feel terrible, because I know that it shouldn’t be her responsibility to drop that much money on things like that for me.
But,on the plus side,I WOULD wear these things again and again.
On the negative side, she also has to pay for my cap and gown, that is,if I’m still unemployed.
I’m not going on my senior trip, because I don’t want her to spend the money.
She has a life too,and I feel like I’m being a spoiled brat if I ask her.
But,I’m not sure what I’ll do if she says no.
I really have NOTHING to wear for these portraits, and I honestly did try to bargain shop.

So.
Give it to me straight.
Am I asking for too much?
Am I too inconciderate?
Is it a terrrrrrrrible amount of cash?
I do many things for myself.
I live in a very small town(Around 600 residents total.)
There really isn’t anywhere to work here.
So,I’m constantly trying to get a job,and yes I DO talk to employees and managers when I hand in my application, letting them know that I’m very interested.
The nearest town is 9 miles away.
I have no license or car, because I won’t ask for it.
I plan on waiting to take my drivers test when I turn 18,which is soon. That way,I don’t need to waste money on drivers ed.
But as for the 9 mile distance,I ride my bike there, everyday.
I carry just as much at home as my mother and her boyfriend do.
We all clean just the same.
I don’t sit around and let everyone do my work for me.
So,I wish you wouldn’t take that tone.
I’m really quite responsible and mature.
I wish you wouldn’t degrade me like that, because it does hurt my feelings.
Unemployment rates obviously aren’t the greatest.
My mom told me not to be discouraged when I don’t get hired, and I try not to
As for the four outfit minimum.
I agree.
But that’s the photographer’s decision,not mine.
I said that I didn’t need senior pictures, but she wanted them.
AND a graduation party,which I definetely don’t want.
