Great Online Bargain Shopping

I will be moving to the New York city area soon, as my job will be in Manhattan, and I’m wondering — hoping? — that there are any safe and less expensive places to live that are near the city, where one could take the subway into Manhattan for work etc.

Basically, I’m looking for the least expensive places to live in one of the 5 boroughs or even outside of it, as long as I’d be able to still commute to Manhattan without a car.

While I don’t expect a bargain, I figure it would probably save some money to live outside of the main parts of the city, and any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you!
